While the previous C4 was a very classic car, the trend is that the current (third) generation plays in the court of SUVs and other crossovers with large wheels and high ground clearance, but also with a certain style, which would not have displeased some brands Japanese.
The model entrusted to us for this test is the high-end Pack Shine. Key in hand, car unlocks when we arrive. As soon as we board the plane, we discover gorgeous leather seats, which are heated, massage and electrically adjustable. We were spoiled, it’s a €400 option. Its smoothness leaves no doubt, we are already on board a Citroen. An important fact, in addition to the high-quality materials, the storage is quite a lot and well thought out, with a real passenger-facing staircase that can accommodate a laptop or tablet. Using a small accessory, the passenger can fix the tablet in front of him thanks to the retractable support in the dashboard. great !
Under the driver’s eyes, the devices are completely digital. It still goes through the impossibility of customizing the screen, but the screen dimensions are extremely small (5.5 inches). However, all the necessary information is there. In the center of the dashboard, the infotainment screen is well integrated and contains two hotkeys (one for the home screen and one for accessing settings). There is nothing to complain about, except that the reception of the DAB signal is really poor and the image quality of the reverse camera leaves something to be desired. However, there is a good point for the air conditioning settings panel with “real” buttons.
At the rear, thanks to the large wheelbase (2.70 meters between the axle of the front wheels and the axle of the rear wheels), the side passengers have enough legroom. Obviously the middle is a little more narrow.
Depending on the style of the bodywork, the trunk sill is very high. The flush floor is removable, and hides a nice extra storage space. Thus there is a useful volume of 340 or 380 liters depending on the position of the removable floor and 1,250 liters with the rear seats folded down. The values are perfect in the middle of the clip.
Let’s end this chapter by stating that the two-panel rear window may not please everyone in terms of visibility, especially since there is no windshield wiper.
On the road
The strong point of this model is the damping quality. The C4 is certainly the only one in its class that offers such a level of smoothness. However, cash movements are well controlled. In short, a great level of comfort. The steering is just as soft and light, as are the lane-keep assist system’s actions, which we didn’t even try to separate. By prioritizing comfort at this point, it’s clear that C4 isn’t very dynamic in its behaviour. But is that really what we would ask of a cart like this?
The 130-horsepower PureTech three-cylinder has a special sound, and it gave us complete satisfaction. Admittedly, in its class, it’s not the class that benefits from the best sound-vibration-proofing, but we can’t help but appreciate its availability at lower speeds and its extension once more is asked. Our test model was equipped with an EAT8 automatic transmission. Here, too, it is not the best (some slight tremors remain to be felt), but the pleasure that this box gives still meets expectations. So we can only recommend it.
The model available to us costs 33,150 euros. Due to the wealth of its gifts (adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, road sign recognition, lane keep assist, blind spot control, reversing camera, head-up display, automatic dual zones, hands-free access/operation, LED headlights With automatic high-beam switching, connected navigation, etc.), we can say that it has a very good price / equipment ratio.
It is undeniable that the Citroën C4 is the most comfortable car in its class. A real pleasure on a daily basis, at least for those who prefer softness over dynamism. Their pricing is also useful, with prices starting at €23,850. In fact, the hardest thing about the C4 is getting used to its quirky lines. But hey, tastes and colors…
