After being reduced to its simplest expression at the beginning of the year due to a shortage, the Volkswagen ID.3 range is again expanding from the top. Do we prefer it over the most expensive Renault Megane?
Life is hard on the Volkswagen ID.3. Bullied by a shortage of semiconductors, the German manufacturer decided to reduce the scope of the zero-emissions agreement to a minimum. Objective: To limit the number of configurations to facilitate production and ensure that the model is delivered within acceptable deadlines. In fact, since February it has been available only with its single engine 204 hp (150 kW), the average battery 58 kWh and a unique finish called Active that is richly equipped and offered at the right price without a plus: € 44,990, excluding the € 6000 bonus. , let’s agree, because the range is expanding again. The Pro S Active model really enriches the small ID.3 family. A direct competitor to the more upscale version of the new Renault Megane E-Tech 100% electric, does it have on paper anything to worry about competing in the Diamond?
Strength or independence, the choice is yours
Despite its premium stature, don’t expect more power from ID.3 Pro S Active than from Pro Performance Active implementation. For fans of power, it will be necessary to wait for the ID.3 GTX, which should be about 300 hp. However, the electric motor, located in the rear, provides a quite decent power of 204 hp. What you see coming is enough to perform the 0-100 km/h workout in less than 8 seconds. With an extra 16 horses, the more expensive Megane does a little better in this workout: 7.4 seconds. But this is one of the only arguments for the French. Because, Not much cheaper (€750 less, neither of which by the way can claim the super-bonus of €6000 and actually settles for €2000), its small 60 kWh battery makes it immediately less attractive than the 77 kWh one per hour from a German one. According to the manufacturers’ figures, its autonomy on the combined cycle will be an average of 100 kilometers less, or even a little more depending on which version and equipment you choose. And since the direct current fast charging power is roughly equivalent (5 kW difference, in favor of ID.3), it is not at this point that we can decide between them. Like what, Volkswagen doesn’t necessarily rhyme with high prices.
A quick look at the equipment, however, shows that the feature is French, but only a bit: 20″ rims versus 19″ for the ID.3, leather-trimmed upholstery against mixed velor leather, a massage function for the front seats. It doesn’t have to be enough to tip the scales in his favour. After that, it’s a matter of taste: some prefer the SUV side of the Mégane over the monocoque side, which goes a bit against the VW trend but ensures better space on board. I’m not sure that this new version will help ID.3 recover, as its sales are down 44% in Europe since the beginning of the year, and even more than half (-59.8%, 1,007 copies) on our territory. To give an idea, a sedan like the Citroën C5 X or a large SUV like the Mercedes GLE sold more during the same period: 1,102 for the first, 1,098 for the second.
