The Ford F-150 is a bit more for the American market than the Renault Clio for the French market or the Golf for the German market. Not in terms of scale, of course, but in terms of commercial success. It’s almost half a century ago that the big pickup (by our standards anyway) is the undisputed leader of its home market. A model that wins awards year after year, which in addition drives the audacity to show off powerful Raptor versions, or even Shelby. It was too much for the guys of RAM – whose 1500 is the second-largest on the market – who therefore decided to respond in a tough fashion with the TRX. The model’s name alone suffices to illustrate the new model’s specific purpose: its sound evokes the name T-Rex, the Anglo-Saxon nickname for a dinosaur. A direct reference to the Raptor, another type of dinosaur made famous through the Jurassic Park saga. And if you watch the first movie, you know who will win in the end…
Plus, if that wasn’t obvious enough, the brand even hid a fun little detail under the hood, a gag that Americans love: by opening the airbox lid, we discover a t-rex devouring … a raptor ! Is it clear enough now!?
If the traditional 1500 RAM isn’t a stealth type in our area, this TRX is way too excessive. Width increases by 15 cm thanks to the widened wings and tracks, while height increases by 12 cm thanks to the new suspension and 35-inch (!) wheels, which make the machine peak at 2.09 meters. Combine all this with a total length of 5.94 meters (+2 cm) and you’ll understand that the TRX needs plenty of space to express itself freely. So forget about urban centers, where you risk feeling like an elephant in a china shop, not to mention the real challenge of finding a parking space.
In addition to the majestic proportions, there is a deliberately aggressive style. All details and entries in particular are completely black. Unfortunately, it blends in with the body color, also black, of our test car, but be aware that whatever color is chosen, the shields, hood inserts, rims, mirrors, fender air plugs and lettering will remain matte black. The front is the best translation of the model’s power, with this exclusive hood fitted with a large auxiliary air intake.
The latter also hides three small LED headlights, which, combined with light reminders at the rear end of the cabin, make the TRX completely recognizable even in the middle of the night. In the aft, the garbage can is wide, but the empty weight of 2,880 kg of the large lizard limits the payload to 620 kg, and this remains at less than 3.5 tons. That’s not much for a pickup, especially this size.
With such a rough exterior, one might expect a cabin that doesn’t cut corners. However, it means quickly forgetting the machine’s American origins, and the taste of opulence enjoyed by Uncle Sam’s country buyers, so the passenger compartment is surprisingly luxurious. Already, the steps automatically exit their dorms once the doorknob is activated, to make it easier to get on the plane (or get off). The equipment is far from superfluous, because the ground clearance is up to 30 cm!
To the touch, the plastics look solid, their fittings are subtle and regular and the upholstery, like all furniture and storm doors, are covered in leather.
Many TRX logos also mention the peculiarity of the model, in the back of the front seat, behind the driver-facing steering wheel, or on the center armrest, where the aluminum plate displays some technical details such as the chassis number, engine and compressor. You certainly don’t achieve the near-perfect fit of a luxury car, and the leather isn’t polished. But we’re still way beyond what we usually find on a pickup truck in our areas. This RAM (like other RAMs) is clearly a cut above Asian and European products when it comes to passenger accommodation.
This can also be seen from the presented equipment, whether it is standard or optional. In the center is a large 12-inch touch screen positioned vertically to replace the traditional center console. Obviously, this makes it possible to control all the functions and parameters of the car, and controls the multimedia system UConnect 4, compatible with Android Auto and, in particular, Apple CarPlay. Behind the wheel, the driver is also entitled to a 7-inch screen placed between the discs, which gives access to all driving information and some of the TRX’s performance offerings.
Above all, the habitability is incredible! Looking at the width of the car, it is clear that the front passengers will not be embarrassed by the elbows. In the back, three adults will be able to sit comfortably on the bench seat, where they will also benefit from the knee clearance worthy of a limousine. Storage space is vast and ubiquitous and in the large central cabinet there’s another humorous nod that Americans have The Secret: The mural represents the size of the TRX compared to a human, a tyrannosaur, and… a velociraptor.
