After they were partners in “Télématin”, fate turned into a totally unexpected romantic duo.
Only the “young people” should pay attention. Advances in medicine not only gave their great-grandfathers and great-grandfathers an amazing physical fitness boost, but also gave them an amazing ability to reinvent their lives. “If young people knew, if old age could,” we were still lamenting not long ago. Many boomers are now proving this saying wrong, and not just in terms of physical activity and intellectual vitality. Mourning, emotional disaster? For a few months, we think they—and they believe in themselves—are forever broken, with no taste for anything, especially love, and then one fine morning, against all odds, they wake up again.

Like the stubble of a tale, they have only bowed under the winds of misfortune, and are now recovering. It’s still certain, but it’s certain, but he’s suddenly re-energized by the vital momentum needed to reinvent destiny. This renewable energy generally finds its source on a similar note: Extending life is a unique gift in human history. But what do we do with it? As soon as the question is asked, the field of possibilities opens.

Baby boomers take pride in projects and their most common dream is to run into another great person in the same mind-set and share their good years remaining. He did not win it in advance, but it so happens that it works beyond what we had hoped, embellishing lovers who impress loved ones and families as much as they charm. What is their secret? A sudden sense of freedom makes it possible that, decades ago, what would have seemed outright absurd or extravagant? A common desire to ward off loneliness? Or the unlikely discovery of a soul mate, an incredible stroke of luck?
Before Sophie, William could no longer see the colors of life, thanks to her, he found them
Every love story is unique, but in the stories of those sixties or seventies who find from day to day their teenage fervor, the constants emerge, curiously similar regardless of age or marital status. Unknown or famous, such as William Limergey and Sophie Davant more recently, describe the same feelings, the first of which is that days may pass but they do not believe this loving resurrection. Sophie Davant, 59, and William Limergey, 75, are still amazed at what is happening to them, a divine surprise they never imagined. Like all of their age, they are also moved by the recollection of the abyssal emptiness that preceded these magical moments: each alone, no longer knowing what to do with his existence. Something happened that overwhelmed them, and led them from day to day discovering an area they didn’t suspect.
The most unique thing about their story – but, in fact, this phenomenon is so frequent – is that Sophie Davant and William Limmerjee did not seek a reunion: they had known each other for thirty-five years and even if their friendship lasted, it became essentially telephone and, by their own admission, appeared Only in dotted lines. So there is no better sample than them if you want to understand this last quarter of existence where everything changes when fate seems completely sealed and the future is forever dark. Until the day of 2021 when he finds Sophie, William still sees her, despite the years, as a young trainee who arrives at the end of the ’80s on the set of “Telematine”. A bump in the stomach but it gave him such a flavor that he decided to become his Pygmalion. Years of learning and complicity until, at the dawn of the 2000s, decided to go off on her own.
Sophie continued to admire the great professional of the profession who had led her the hard way but his sense of humor greatly pleased her too, which led William, a very rare favor, to accept her into his family circle. An anecdote alone summed up their relationship: Sophie, before her marriage to Pierre Slade, who had been her husband for a long time, as if she had known him over her, felt as though she could not marry without his blessing … A Normandy country house very close to the home of the Leymergies, and since then, despite the five Ten years separated, the couple shared almost everything, weekends, children’s games, holidays, project professionals, bad days and high hopes. After that, Sophie and Pierre, sadly vulgar, chose different paths and misfortunes followed: divorce, the sale of Norman’s house, new risky love affairs. At the dawn of her fifties, Sophie found herself alone and forced to lead everything at the same time, work, children, and private life more and more fragile. Such a challenge did not leave him enough time to maintain the friendship that once united him to William and his wife.
Their mutual love has not changed, but their relationship has faded. Sophie and he are not absent from each other, but we are not far from this: she is limited to calling him from time to time to give him news and ask for advice. He bestows it on her willingly, but a bit as reckless because he, too, has changed. He finished France2 and “Télématin”, and is now official at C8 and Europe1. In 2020, at the age of 73, when he was his grandfather several times, his existence is more connected than ever to who has not ceased to be the pillar of his professional and private life, his wife Marilyn. The credit is made without the power of “the whirlwind of life”, to use the lyrics of the Jin Moreau song.
When he tells her he likes her, she thinks it’s a joke… like on TV!
At the exact moment, June 2020, when the future seems definitively written, the unimaginable happens: William wakes up one morning without finding his wife by his side. He searches for her all over their house and eventually finds her. It is unconscious and the damage from a heart attack is such that any attempt at resuscitation is doomed to fail. In a Netflix series, we’ll of course see Sophie working at the moment and playing mourners. But life is more complex and less predictable than fiction. When Sophie hears the news, she’s so far from Paris, it’s her first day on vacation and she’s not alone. However, after seeing her mother die in the year of her twentieth birthday, she imagines the rest. She’s so much more straightforward that she knows William well: he wouldn’t want to be trusted. What to do? Once she got home, she chose to call him from time to time, only to tell him he could count on her. It does not hold the shaft. None of his children succeeded in keeping him out of his pain.
One day, exhausted, someone asked Sophie to invite him to her house for the weekend. She is convinced that he will refuse. Miracle, accept. When the day comes, you discover a strangely absent man, and in return, you feel despair. In spite of everything, she tries to cheer him up, finds the tone and symbols of the “decades” of the era of “Telematine”. Immediately, to his great surprise, he became the same again. She ventures to offer him back. Twice, three times, William spends the weekend at her house, though he has always hated sleeping with people. But Sophie, it was different, it wasn’t “the people”. So much so that on the third weekend he spontaneously resumed slapstick. Beginning to come back to life. He compares this rebirth to the cataract process: there was like a veil between him and existence. Everything was gray, dark, no longer seeing the colors of life. And suddenly he found them thanks to Sophie.
During these three weekends, he also discovers a woman he didn’t know: a 59-year-old mother who is continuing her life and career. He was amazed and delighted at the sight of her maturation, he observed, and bewildered, this new Sophie who was no longer little Sophie in Telematine, but a woman who was no longer expecting anyone. Evidence: I adopted a dog!
Then one day, they realize that they love to spend the weekend together. But nothing more. They had absolutely no plans for the future. After all, as in many similar stories, a bond of an unprecedented nature has been made without their knowledge, indefinable but strong enough that on the day Sophie goes on vacation without telling her, William is upset.
When he returned, he invited her to dinner. What did he tell her? She understands, in any case, that he loves her. As a result, she refused to take him seriously. She believes in another joke, she burst out laughing. not funny. As is often the case after the event, it is in this attraction that it all begins. For him, for her, another life begins, and at the same time, life begins anew. However, in full realization, that there is nothing that can cancel out the past: what is there.
To evoke this unique transformation, the two born evoked the sentence made by Montand after Signoret’s death: “We don’t remake our lives. We carry on with it, that’s it. They say the secret lies in accepting all possibilities. Living together, or not, they don’t know yet: it will happen.” That or it will not, for the time being, they meet only on weekends and holidays. And for the rest, I confess, we will not replace those who have left, make their experiences an advantage rather than a source of fear, stave off the fears of the profession together, rediscover the taste of the “fears” of their youth, the journeys of passion to be made, like adolescents, a number of common curiosities, cinema, theater, and concerts. Finally, in all that they do, they inculcate what allows, in each moment, to continue to be amazed: the flavor of imagination. So the future, in all this? Virtues of tenderness, Senior lovebirds discover that wisdom: the present!
