Summer Series – How … Renault?

Despite its slight drawbacks in terms of autonomy, the new Renault Megane eTech has achieved success in the ratings of bestsellers in France. 25,000 orders have been registered since the commercial launch last May, 75% on high-end versions, which is pretty good for margin. However, since the car has just been launched, these numbers are largely influenced by dealer orders. Perhaps they explain why Renault outperformed in July in France: In a market down 7.06%, diamonds rose 14.45%, or 15,149 total sales and a 14.09% penetration. From January to July, accounting for 142,167 registered cars, the plant decreased by 14.15% in line with the market (-15.31%).

The success of Renault Captur 2 is undeniable: it just snatched fifth place in the French market from Peugeot 2008.

On the other hand, if the European market falls 14% in the first half of 2022, Renault is down 20.8% (347,690 sales), which remains less violent than the dismantling of Volkswagen, Peugeot, Fiat or even Citroen.

Renault has good assets in its range, such as the Arkana. This SUV, launched in 2020, has already sold more than 100,000 units (60% in E-Tech), including 18,168 from January to July 2022 in France. Very good characters, because it is a kind of niche car, being a coupe. Nevertheless, the Peugeot 3008 remains in the lead.

Another model with the wind in its sails, the Captur, which made 29,733 registrations over 6 months 2022, beats the Peugeot 2008 for once and occupies the fifth place in the French market. In the second, we find the Clio that could not take over the Peugeot 208, far from it: at 37,828 sales, it is ahead of Sochaux by about 15,000.

To find other Renaults, you have to dive in 13th, to find Twingo with its 13,517 sales, 17th where we find Mégane (11,591 sales) and 25th place for Zoé (9,077 sales). Aging models, but less than Kadjar, Grand Scenic and Koleos models, which no longer appear in the French Top 30 list. Thus, the former Régie has cut his business to revive his range, and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Austral on the market, to replace Kadjar.

Rhino Akana is off to a very good start to her career, but the Australian's arrival could hurt her.

In general, Renault can count on only three commercially efficient models, Clio, Captur and Arcana, and the Mégane E-Tech still has to prove itself, even if it seems to be off to a good start. Once a leader in the field of electricity, the French brand has been largely bypassed in this sector and must work hard to catch up with its competitors. She could no longer count on the originality of her design or on innovative concepts to make a difference, while this greatly benefited her in the 1990s. Finally, the alliance with Nissan appears to be weak, undermining existing technical synergies as necessary.

Renault Clu-V sells well, even if the Peugeot 208 overtakes it in the French market, it is not better but more tempting.

Despite everything, the Renault group entity, which includes Renault, Dacia and Alpine, maintains its sales compared to the first half of 2021 (21.1 billion euros). This, despite a 11.9% drop in global sales, due in part to the shutdown of operations in Russia. This last point is clearly not decisive, because the French group, like the others, has increased its operating margin.

It now stands at €988 million, or 4.7% of sales, an increase of 556 million and 2.6 points over the first six months of 2022. The group estimates that the semiconductor crisis will cost it 300,000 sales in 2022. It remains to be so. See if it will be able to get it back once the situation returns to normal, most likely in 2023, knowing that its offer in terms of electric models will remain insufficient.
