The greenest electric cars, according to Bloomberg

Bloomberg has just released its ranking of the best electric cars marketed in the United States. Approximately 35 patterns appear in this evolving chart, with scores dropping from 100 from 71.1 to 27.4.

Carbon footprint in use

In order to arrive at its ranking, Bloomberg has embarked on scientific calculations that take into account the work of the MIT Research Institute. Over the life of the vehicle, 70% is attributable to the carbon footprint related to vehicle use.

This value takes into account the vehicle’s mileage range, in relation to its empty weight in pounds, and in relation to a reference value set at 0.1099. The latter is 10% higher than the range/weight ratio of the more efficient car.

The best is to take for example the Lucid Air Dream Edition group that comes out on top of the podium with a score of 71.1 out of 100. It has a range of 520 miles. It weighs 5,203 pounds empty with battery. As a first step, Bloomberg divides independence by weight: 520/5,203 = 0.0999423.

This result is again divided by the reference value 0.1099. Which gives us 0.909393. And to get a share of 70%, this number is multiplied by 0.7 and then by 100. So: 0.909393 x 0.7 x 100 = 63.65751.

Carbon Footprint in Manufacturing

To determine differences in the manufacturing carbon footprint, Bloomberg is focusing on the battery only. Assuming other elements won’t play a big role. ” A wiring harness, for example, consumes as many resources in making a Ford Mustang Mach-E as it does in making a Mini Cooper SE. ‘, justifies the US agency.

Starting with that acronym, the build’s carbon footprint, reduced to that of the pack, weighs 30% over the vehicle’s life. A new fixed reference value was calculated: 29.34. That’s 10% less than the kilowatt-hour power capacity of the smallest lithium-ion battery on board an electric vehicle marketed in the United States.

This number is divided by the actual capacity of the model being rated (118 kWh for the Lucid Air Dream Edition range). So for this car, 29.34 over 118 equals 0.248644. The weighting is obtained by multiplying this value by 0.3 and then by 100, which results in 7.45932.

To find out the tone of the car, it is enough at the end to add the two values. This means 63.65751 + 7.45932 for the selected Lucid Air, i.e. 71.11683, rounded to 71.1.

With strong blows of the machete

Battery chemistry, origin and life of cells which also depends on temperature management system, place of manufacture, true efficiency, ability to repair and recycle packaging, etc. : All this information which is nonetheless considered important for determining the rating of electric cars from the most virtuous student to the worst, has been omitted entirely.

Reliance on greenhouse gas emissions only, autonomy according to the weight of the vehicle and the energy capacity of the battery only is taken into account. In theory, models with small packages should be preferred. At first, the Lucid Air Dream Edition set proves otherwise.

There is still a slight advantage to relying on the autonomy, empty weight and energy capacity of the batteries, that the rating, however ideal, could be valid in France, Europe and elsewhere … if there were no other models of electric cars in these regions.

This work is not useless, but it requires that it be completed, especially to receive a name other than ” green arrangement For example, there is no justification for the place both models have taken. We find something for Lucid Air with evoking the aerodynamics and efficiency of its engines. But this suspension is far from the norm.

Tesla alignment

If Tesla was not at the top today in the Bloomberg rating, then the manufacturer was a few days ago, before the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range was introduced. This indicates that this table is scalable.

Moreover, at the production date of this article, the agency warns that there will be future introductions during the current year 2022. These are the Audi A6 e-tron, Nissan Ariya, Cadillac Lyriq, Fisker Ocean, Audi Q4 e-tron and Jeep Wrangler Magneto EV . In total, more than 25 new electric vehicles should be added to the rating by the end of 2024.

Three Tesla cars are located in 5 places by restricting each model to the highest degree of deflection. These are the Model 3 Long Range (2nd; 66.7 out of 100), Tesla Model S Plaid (3rd; 61.8) and Tesla Model Y Long Range (5th; 58.8).

The Chevrolet Bolt snuck into fourth place with a score of 59.5. Korean group Hyundai comes only next, smashing the US car lineup: Hyundai Kona Electric (6th; 58), Kia Niro EV (8th; 53.3) and Kia EV6 (ninth; 52.3).

European premiere in eleventh place

The first European electric car took eleventh place. This is a BMW i4 (51.6 / 100). We are in the US market in this order. So neither Renault nor a model from the Stylantis range.

Among the electric cars we know in France, there are also Hyundai Ioniq 5 (12; 50.5), Volkswagen ID.4 (15; 49.8), Mini Cooper SE (16; 49.3), Nissan Leaf (18; 49), Mercedes EQS (19; 48) …

Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan open the division that combines less efficient electric cars, with a score of under 40. But three American pickups are in the Red Lantern: Ford F-150 Lightning (33/100) and Rivian R1T (30.8) and GMC Hummer (27.4). We can’t wait to see how the Tesla Cybertruck will stack up against them.
