The Meta Quest 2 VR headset has seen a huge price hike

4

Two years after its launch, the VR Quest 2 headset from Meta (ex-Oculus/Facebook) will soon change in price, but not in the direction we were expecting. It is already an increase of €100 which will be applied to the two models available.

How does the pricing table work?

If we need more evidence that the tech world is turning upside down these days, the latest comes to us from Meta. Two years after the launch of the standalone Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset, the conference wished that if its price was adjusted, it would be reduced. But the opposite is already true: from August 2022, the price will be inflated by €100 for the two models available.

It will therefore be necessary to pay 449 euros and 549 euros respectively for the 128 GB and 256 GB versions of the headphones, instead of the prices of 349 euros and 449 euros that are still valid for a few days. Price increases on accessories, for example the Elite hard headband, are also expected. To pass the bean, the basic rhythm game Saber won It will be available to all new Quest 2 buyers until December 31, 2022.

High manufacturing costs as justification

To justify this increase, Meta unsurprisingly raises the current speculation and violent inflation in the prices of raw materials, which greatly affects the cost of production of the helmet. The company also highlights “Billions of Dollars” invest “To promote and grow a thriving VR ecosystem”and guarantees that these price increases will allow it “To continue investing in research and development of groundbreaking new products that will take the virtual reality industry to new heights.”.

This is not the first time, with the highly complex period the world is currently going through, that a technology product is seeing its price adjust upward. We remember, for example, the increase that Nvidia implemented in January 2022 on its RTX 30 Founders Edition graphics cards, a year and a few months after the launch of the first models in the series. However, the case for the Quest 2 is remarkable for the relative size of the increase: expressed as a percentage, the increase recorded by the entry-level model, at 128GB of storage, is a staggering 27%. The situation is even more impressive in the United States, since in its native territory this same model scores + 33%, from 299 to 399 dollars (the 256 GB model, meanwhile, ranges from 399 to 499 dollars).

A new, more reasonable approach to the market?

It’s worth noting that upon its initial release in fall 2022, the Quest 2 was priced at a very aggressive price point. Its entry price of €299/349 was, and remains to this day, completely unprecedented for a VR headset with this level of equipment, and although the headset’s manufacturing cost was never announced, there’s no doubt it was there. It was sold at a huge loss by Facebook/Meta.

This was part of the company’s strategy to accelerate VR adoption by the general public at all costs, all while behind the scenes they were already preparing major projects related to the popular Metaverse. Only then, two years later, said projects proved to be staggeringly expensive for Mark Zuckerberg, and even an organization with such a luxury-filled bank account could not think of a $13 billion abyss without a reaction. So we dare to speculate that these new prices also reflect a new, more reasonable approach to the market.

If there are no offers to discover

Finally, remember that Meta plans to release a new model of standalone VR headsets by the end of 2022, which we know today under the codename Project Cambria. If it is rumored that the device can eventually be called Quest Pro, it will not replace the Quest 2, and will be placed much higher in the range: rumors of the arcade raise a price above 1000 euros. As for a potentially “real” Quest 3, he’ll probably still be very patient.
