What are the most reliable brands?

The durability of the products offered by a smartphone brand is an important criterion to consider before choosing a model. We evaluate the most reliable manufacturers in this field.

We often choose our smartphone according to its price and technical characteristics, but rarely according to its reliability and durability, and often due to the lack of information on these topics. We now have a few objective items to analyze thanks to the after-sales service metric that the Fnac Darty Group implements each year.

Three criteria to determine the durability of products

To determine its ranking of the most sustainable brands, Fnac Darty identified three important criteria: the length of spare parts availability, the repairability and reliability of the equipment. These three criteria are studied to determine the sustainability score (out of 200).

Let’s start with the degree of reform. Calculated from the repair rate (the ratio between equipment repaired and replaced) to which the lifetime of spare parts is added. A more accurate calculation than the repairability index calculation.

For its part, the reliability score is obtained by dividing the number of devices repaired and replaced by after-sales service Darty (excluding repairs without parts) by the number of devices that still benefit from the two-year statutory warranty of conformity. Finally, the sustainability score is calculated simply by averaging the previous scores.

In total, this represents 721,000 Darty aftermarket service interventions on 76 types of devices (not just smartphones) between August 2020 and July 2021. To complement the data from its scale, the brand also interviewed 41,000 of its customers. between July 5. and August 27, 2021 to understand the circumstances in which they have to replace their products.

The most durable phone brand

At the top of the ranking of the most durable smartphones, we find Apple with a total score of 137 points, well supported by the availability of spare parts for 5 years. The same note for Samsung which comes in second place in the ranking with 136 points. However, the reliability score is the second worst result in the ranking after Nokia (times change). But the Korean manufacturer compensates it with spare parts available for 7 years. At this point, the brand is far ahead of the competition.

Huawei took the third step on the podium, followed by Honor, which has the highest reliability score, but only 98 points in repairability. Follow Oppo, Xiaomi, Wiko, Nokia and Logicom that appear in the back.

Thus, the two most reliable smartphone brands in this ranking are Honor and Huawei. On the other hand, the two most durable phone brands are Apple and Samsung. Two manufacturers are also at the top of the rankings of the largest smartphone suppliers in the first quarter of 2022.

We also learn in the barometer that the life of a replaced smartphone is 4 years. A number higher than the number Arcep noted in its lifetime smartphone inventory.

On the other hand, the software update policy is not mentioned which also plays a role in smartphone replacement. In this small game, Apple wins at least 6 years of major iOS updates, compared to four years for Samsung’s high-end models. For its part, Germany claims 7 years of modernization for our smartphones.
